I'm not ranking this song because it's not really song; it serves more to guide the listener into the album. I think it blended well, though, and it's technically a track, so I included it.
Angels: 9/10
SUCH A BOP! I love this song. It's so groovy and dancable, and it's where Chase Atlantic fans get their name (Angels). The only reason I didn't rank this 10/10 is because it's not a deep cut. Most of the 10/10 songs from CA are because of their lyrics, but there are DEFINITELY exceptions to this rule.
Phases: 9/10
The title track! A good song, and I can relate to the lyrics. It gets right into the chorus too, which I can appreciate when the song is slower like this one is. There's also these swells in the chorus every eight beats, which makes for a higher energy than the song could've had otherwise. It's a pretty ambient tune, and the saxophone solo is SO fitting. The end chorus is also something I really haven't heard in a CA song before, so it's an interesting change up from their usual beats.
Love Is (Not) Easy: 10/10
UGH this song gets me in my feels. It has the lyrics which I find the second best off this album, first being "I Don't Like Darkness", and it's because of the accents they choose to use. They use words and phrases where the accent on on every third syllable instead of every other, and it makes the triple meter and swing of the song really shine through. The instrumental isn't my favorite, but the sheer emotional impact of it makes this a 10/10.
Her: 9/10
The intrumental to this song is SO good. The different tracks blend together in such a perfect way. The lyrics aren't particularly sappy in the way that I tend to prefer, but the melody and the lyrics are genuinely great. It's one of the more upbeat songs off the album, and I do appreciate it for being a mood lifter. I listen to this song when it comes on in a playlist, and I do occasionally seek it out to listen to. Certified bop.
No Rainbows: 8/10
This is a deeply emotional song and it feels like it is listening to it. It's smooth in a way you might expect jazz to be, and the saxophone throughout but especially in the beginning tie the whole track together. For a song which has the auditory experience of crying (in the best way), the lyrics in the chorus don't fit the way that I would've expected it. It's an entirely selfish reason to give the song an 8/10, but this is my blog, damn it, and I'm the captain now.
Heaven And Back: 8/10
Groovy. Overplayed for me so 8/10. I do like the instrumental and vocals, and they are easy to dance to, which I can always appreciate. As it is with most songs, the second verse is my favorite. The accents on the off beats goes so hard. Even as I'm typing this, I find myself grooving along in my seat to it. It's a jam of existential proportion and honestly? It's making me rethink the rating, but I'm a stubborn SOAB and I'm keeping it like it is.
Stuckinmybrain: 10/10
AN EMO BANGER. Out of every song on this album, this is the song I choose to listen to when I'm in my feelings. The actual music of the song is phenomenal as well, the melody and the rhythm. I will enjoy this song until it gets scraped from the Internet, and then I will listen to the multiple copies I save on thumb drives around various properties in my city. There's also a few in other states and one overseas. Not really. But I will get there with song song whether I want to or not. I LOVE THIS SONG.
Even Though I'm Depressed: 9/10
I'm not sure what words I would use to describe this song. I'd say high energy, but not in a way to dance to. It has a faster BPM than most if not all of the songs on this album, and it really pulls the song along. The percussion is also pretty quick, and it makes the song sounds very upbeat even against the depressing-as-shit lyrics. If I liked songs this fast more, I'd probably give it a 10/10, but I feel like it's doing too much every once in a while, and I don't love that. Overall, though, one of my favorites.
Too Late: 10/10
Another fantastic song. The instrumental to this song is probably my favorite on the album. There's a good amount of "bopping" involved which is SO cool. The music video to this song does include spiders, but the way that they do it makes me not immediately want to throw the screen across the room, which is the usual reaction I have to seeing them. I would play this at a party. This is probably why I don't get invited to parties.
I Never Existed: 8/10
Probably my least favorite song off the album EXCLUDING THE BRIDGE. I'd give the song a 7/10, but the bridge SAVES it for me. SAVES IT. There's not another section of this album which has quite the aura that matches it. The reason I ranked it so low is, again, just because it's not my style. I don't love the sort of simple, eighth-note droning that the song has. The bridge has more complex rhythms in it, which really makes it. There's also a backing vocal from Kras in the second pre-chorus where his voice has some distortion to it, which I LOVE. Good song.
I Don't Like Darkness: 10/10
This song is my favorite off the album full stop. There is nothing I wouldn't do for this song. I resonate on Every Single Front with this song. I will get this song tattoo'ed on me if I ever have the money to spare (side note: ooo deja vu). The second verse is my favorite portion of this song. There's nothing more I can say. Go listen to it.
